Services for community economic development organizations at the municipal, county, or multi-county regional level:

Development and implementation of strategies that integrate telecommunications and transportation for travel reduction. For example, see the award-winning Telecommunications Deployment Strategy we prepared for Southern California Association of Governments.  We implement promotion of videoconferencing and other advanced applications across multiple organizations in a regional setting.

Design and implementation of telecommunications strategy for regional development. For example, how to keep your community from lagging behind in the deployment of new services. We think government and community interests should focus on specifying, building, and promoting applications, and stimulate the private sector to take the risks in building infrastructure. See John Niles on government networks.

Services for chambers of commerce, economic development associations, and other civic leadership organizations working on regional surface transportation plans

Improved planning for regional transportation and land development, to take into account the dynamics of nonwork travel, and bring a greater focus on cost-effectiveness in transportation infrastructure investments.  In partnership with Integrated Transport Research, we call this service The Regional Transportation Reality Check.

Linking transportation planning to the reality of telecommunications. What can we predict telecommuting, videoconferencing, and electronic shopping will mean for transportation demand in the year 2020? Global Telematics recognizes both the travel-saving and travel-generating implications of advanced telecommunications; see Beyond Telecommuting for lists of both. We can adapt the strategy developed for the greater Los Angeles region to any metropolitan urban area in the world.

Integration of transportation improvement opportunities from Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) into regional transportation plans. The first step is to recognize the potential.

Services for businesses and other organizations seeking to improve performance:

Identifying and melding telework and teleservice (including telecommuting, videoconferencing, and electronic service delivery) into business opportunities, plans, and policy. We have a performance-oriented, analytical perspective, as opposed to an advocacy, promotional perspective.

Help any kind of organization -- industrial, commercial, non-profit -- to improve their own operations by exploiting government interest and funding in travel demand management aimed at fighting traffic congestion and putting off construction of new roads. This service is a spin-off from our Telecommunications Deployment Strategy work in Southern California.

Critical examination of existing telecommuting and telework activities for implementation opportunities as well as for improvement of business performance through redesign or rollback of telework. After ten years in the field, Global Telematics now approaches telecommuting and telework from a revisionist perspective that balances a telework and face-to-face perspective. See slides from John Niles' presentation at the 1996 Annual Conference of the International Teleworking Association, and his assessment of telecommuting as a workforce development strategy for the Workforce 2020 Conference at Hudson Institute in September, 1998.

Ongoing R&D Programs

Understanding the transport-telecom tradeoff at the macro-economic level of an entire country or group of countries. See Beyond Telecommuting prepared by Global Telematics for Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and funded by U.S. Department of Energy.

Defining a new science and art of relationship management from the integration of existing corporate activities in travel management, telework strategy, and facility location strategy. We are teaming with Lehman Associates on this line of business.

Understanding call-vs.-visit dynamics as a matter of psychology, human and organizational effectiveness, and societal cost-benefit. See On the Network or In a Room?, an online workshop extract.

Understanding the relationship between pattern and density of urban land use, and preferred, effective patterns of human mobility and communications. Findings to date indicate that certain extreme public investments in Transit Oriented Development -- for example, billions for new urban trains -- can be a waste of scarce resources.

Understanding the relationship between telematics and sustainable development.
